Funtimes at Bayside Bowl

Funtimes at Bayside Bowl

Ed preparing to Strike! Or Spare!

It is Edmund’s office holiday party tonight. In fact, I’m writing this as I watch over bowling activities.

Edmund told me about it last week and I told him it sounded like fun and I would pick him up after work at home and we’d drive over from there.

I forgot to put it on my calendar.

Needless to say, I was surprised when I got a call from Edmund asking me when I’d be picking him up. I was still at work. I totally forgot!

Now on a normal night, I could’ve left work right then and been able to pick him up and make it to the party in time. But Nooooo. It HAD to be snowing. My 30 minute commute turned to 45. And the roads were pretty messy. But I only slipped once.

We were fashionably late.

Here’s hoping that the roads are good on the way home. Fingers crossed.

Rats!

Watched Life of Mammals the Opportunists with Edmund.  Hosted by my bud Sir David Attenbourogh, natch.

Spoiler: humans are an opportunistic mammal. Along with rats we humans closed out the show. Go humans! We’ll (as a sepcies) will eat ANYTHING.

Like me. Tonight I ate a grilled cheese sandwich with a scrambled egg in the middle. Tea to drink with it. Followed by a combo of watermelon sherbet and red raspberry ice cream for dessert.

Now we are watching a Nova episode about Mount Saint Helens. Fascinating.
Maybe later I’ll drink some chai tea.

When living in Boston, I once saw a giant rat. They were doing construction near the T. I looked at another passerby and said “Now that be a rat!” They did not share my wonderment. Whatever.

Perceptions of the Mind’s Eye in American Gods

Re-reading Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. Great book.

On this read-thru it occured to me that the way I’ve always pictured how the main character Shadow looks is likely very different from what he actually is supposed to look like. And I still think I’m right.

I picture Shadow as looking like Vin Diesel.  Bald, buff, hot. But,  the author in his inestimable wisdom keeps describing Shadow’s hair.

Shadow is bald.

Shadow keeps looking at his hair EVEN THOUGH HE’S BALD!

Insane.

No worries, I am soldiering through. Vin Diesel’s visage firmly fixed in my mind.

Short short

Here is my Saturday blag post. It will be short short.

Today I’ve been reading Harry Potter, napping, eating pork roast and chilling at a Poetry reading.

That is all.

Sleepy Day

Read and napped all day. Coming home at 3:30 this morning took me for a loop. And now I’m not that tired.

Re-reading the Harry Potter series.  On the 6th book, the Half-Blood Prince. If you’ve never read it, I totally recommend.  Fantastic.

Maybe I am tired. Just yawned bigtime.

Loved the newest Hobbit. More than the first.  Recommend.

Trying to think of something clever to write about.  I got nuthin.

On that note…

Off to Hobbiton

Off to Hobbiton

Tonight I am off to Hobbiton. Or to see the Hobbit, whichever comes first.

Excited.

Looks like I will be going solo. Mainly because I couldn’t convince anyone to go with me.

I’m fine with that. Never needed to have company at the movies. Sure, sometimes it’s nice to have a compatriot. But when push comes to shove I don’t need nobody.

(Maybe I’ll try to convince my Mom to come with. Although she wasn’t volunteering with enthusiasm when I mentioned it to her last week.)

I just bought my ticket. Because Edmund was concerned I hadn’t purchased it yet. Now I have. And I am ready to go. With many hours to wait. Might as well work.

Also: Dwarves are NOT HOT!

Back on the Pod Wagon – Lounging with LannaLee Hiatus is OVER!

I guess.

Recorded a solo podcast on my way home yesterday (during the whole running out of Windshield Wiper Fluid debacle). I did not mention it because I wasn’t sure how it would come out. Verdict: good enough.

And you know what that means? The unexplained and unexpected hiatus is OVER. And kinda explained. The issue: you are gonna have to wait until tomorrow to listen to it!

It feels good to be back in the saddle again. Very good.

Windshield Wiping Fluid

I ran out of windshield wiper fluid on the way home from work today. Which was problematic because the other cars were spraying dirty snow schmutz on my windshield. And I had more than 10 miles to drive til I could easily get to a place to buy a replacement.

That was today’s drama.

Resolution: stopped at Cumby’s on my way home to procure more fluid. And I poured it into my car. And used it. To clean my windows. And all was right with the world.

Edmund and I watched LA Story and then he made me dinner. Steak and Rice Pilaf. Delicious.

Now time for more Harry Potter before I go to bed.

Blag Post Brilliance…

is short today,  so I’ve got this for ya.

It was raining on my way home from work today. Since the temperature was 29°, the rain could’ve been problematic.  Fortunately the roads were good and I not only made it home safely, the scariest part of my commute was the walk to the car. Winning.

Edmund and I watched the movie Fletch tonight.  I liked it better the first time I saw it. Then we watched David Attenbourogh’s Life Of Mammals. A fantastic show. Edmund fell asleep during it, which is usually my job. Love to have the tables turned every once and a while.

Going to start the 4th Harry Potter book in a few. And then go to sleep. Later this week I hope to do something productive. (As pertains to my Podast). Woo.

How you doin’?

Beans The Musical Fruit

And that’s all I have to say about that.

Made beans today. They came out pretty good. Beany even.

Watched Primeval and took a nap. A full day, it was.

My regular Kindle is acting up. Books disappearing. I reboot it and it starts working again. Sometimes. I am fortunate in that I have 2 other options to read my Kindle books, my Fire and my phone.  But they pale in comparison to the reading experience of my (now) old-school Kindle Keyboard. I hope this does not mean my Kindle is going bye – bye.  I’ll reset/reformat back to factory settings first – it seems like it’s a software rather than hardware issue.

Re-reading the Harry Potter series. On the third book. So glad I got the Kindle versions: the physical books get heavier the further along in the series it is.

All of a sudden it’s 11:30. Time for bed.

Forgot. Post. Party. Fun.

Forgot. Post. Party. Fun.

Went to Christmas party I alluded to last night. And came home and chilled out and forgot to write my blag post.

So I write it now,  under the wire.

Look! Here is a picture to distact you with:

Now I’m watching some Primeval (Sci-Fi show).

Tomorrow Mom and I will venture north to go to a family Christmas party. (I have my Yankee Swap gift all ready to go.)

(Another Punk Post For The Win!)

David Attenborough Rocks My Socks Off

I mean Sir David Attenborough Rocks My Socks Off.

Since we got Amazon Prime, Edmund and I have enjoyed watching a few nature programs, many of them narrated and/or produced by David Attenborough. Last night I had an epiphany about Sir Attenborough: he is very cool.

I mean, at first blush he is decidedly NOT cool. Wearing silly hats and rolling around on the ground talking about animals. Narrating while riding through the shot on a boat. It’s hard to explain, but it’s wonderfully dorky. I’ve included some clips below, but I wasn’t able to find a truly dorky one.

What makes him so cool is that he is not trying to be cool. He is just doing things that he loves. Things that turn him on. And that rocks my socks off.

His animal geekiness is infectious:

Here he is being all kinds of awesome:

Am I going to punk out? I think I’m going to Punk out.

Maybe I won’t. We’ll see.

Ennui – it’s what’s for dinner.

Things I am doing at the same time:

  • Writing this Blag post
  • Taking stupid internet list challenges
  • Googling Ennui to make sure I was using it correctly
  • Transferring over 7 GB of music from my phone to my computer (so I can then transfer it back to my SD card)
  • Googling “how to make sure my galaxy s4 amazon mp3 goes to SD card”
  • Contemplating getting my kindle to read while I transfer my data
  • Wanting to go to sleep

What are you doing?

I think about writing my blag posts all day: Kick Ass Musings

I think about writing my blag posts all day: Kick Ass Musings

By the end of the day I have thought of several ideas on what I want to write about, only to not feel like writing about them when I start writing.

This doesn’t happen all the time. But it happened today.

I wanted to write about the violence in the movie Kick Ass. Edmund and I saw it last night, and we both though it was too violent. I thought it missed the mark.

Screw it. I think I WILL write about Kick Ass.

Note: there will be spoilers for the movie Kick Ass below. If you don’t like spoilers, don’t read the spoiler part.

One of Edmund’s Facebook Friends responded to his post about the movie saying, well, let me show you:

The response to Edmund’s complaint about the violence: “It’s supposed to be ott, man. It’s a comic book movie.”

My first thought was, yeah sure, it’s a comic book movie: so what? It doesn’t mean Kick Ass gets a pass on violence. The violence still has to be palatable, and to me it wasn’t.

My creds: I was brought up watching rated R movies on VCR in the 1980s. My Dad loved him a good action or Sci-Fi flick, and he, my brother and I would watch them together. The Charles Bronson Death Wish movies, the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry movies, horror flicks. I have a fine appreciation of Quentin Tarantino films, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1 and 2. I LOVED 300 and enjoyed Sin City – two more “Comic Book” movies. So when I say I thought a movie was too violent, it’s not because I am some sort of shrinking violet.

***********HERE BE SPOILERS***********
In the scene where Hit Girl meets Kick Ass they are in a room of drug dealers. Kick Ass is trying to tell the main guy to leave his girl friend alone. Hit Girl comes in and kills (i.e. murders) everyone in the room. [Hit Girl is an 11-year-old super heroine with awesome fighting and shooting skills.] My issue was not that she murders everyone, it was that it was not clear that they DESERVED to die. They were drug dealers. Whatevs. Stealing their drugs and/or money is a suitable punishment. Death is over-the-top. Death is what bad guys deal, not good guys.

And Hit Girl is supposed to be a good guy. Not like the Comedian in The Watchmen, who was maybe on the good guy side, but an awful person, who did bad things. Hit Girl is supposed to be on the side of good and therefore should not be murdering with impunity.

In a scene later in the movie Hit Girl comes to rescue her dad, Big Daddy and Kick Ass, and she kills every one in sight. And here the murder death kill was acceptable. These guys were going to kill Big Daddy and Kick Ass and therefore deserved to die. Later still she storms the kingpin bad guy’s lair and kills just about everyone. Again: acceptable. The scenes were a little over the top, but whatevs.

Now what is unclear to me is whether I would feel the same way if Hit Girl were Hit Guy or if Hit Girl was a bit older. I don’t think so. But I admit there may be some bias there.
*************************

And another thing: Where are my women at? Where are my black people at? There were two, count em, TWO roles for women in this film. Everyone else with a substantial role was a dude (and mostly white.) No reason half the thugs couldn’t be women. No reason half the lead roles could’ve been played by a person of color. No reason at all. I mean, it’s a FANTASY.

I am so over the sausage fest.
