Observation: Shoes

I wrote this for my Memoir class. The assignment: Observation of a pair of shoes.

I’m wearing my green crocs. Well, they’re my green LL Bean knock off crocks. Hey, I’m sitting in the LL Bean building of the Maine Medical Center wearing my green LL Bean croc-type-equivalents.

My green croc-like LL Bean shoes are dirty. The left one was a black mark by the big toe. They are splotched with dirt and grime. I should probably wash them. That’s the thing about croc-like shoes, they are very washable. I wonder if my feet are swollen. My feet feel tight in my shoes. Clammy. If I flex my right foot, I can see a snaggly toenail from my great toe on that foot. I just slid my right foot out, it stuck a little as I did, making a sucking noise. My foot has little holes on it, where the air holes are on the not-crocs. Wow, these things are very dirty. I really should’ve washed them before I came to the hospital.

My Mom is napping in her room. My father is waiting with me in the solarium. While I do homework, he’s dozing in a chair. My Mom’s room is in the Richard’s building, the solarium is in the LL Bean building on the same floor. My brother stands in the doorway between the buildings and says “now I’m in LL Bean, now I’m in Richards. LL Bean. Richards. LL Bean.”

Least Popular Blog on the Internet

I like to joke that I have the Least Popular Blog Blag on the internet.

Well, I really do have the least popular blag.

I’ve had a blog (of sorts) since 1999/2000. I started out by coding everything myself using basic HTML, and updating the same way. A painstaking process.

In 2002 I graduated to using the Blogger platform. But I didn’t do blogspot blogs, I integrated the blog into my (crappily designed) websites – the Blogger interface is what I wanted, an easy way to update. Once the design was complete, I was all set. Until I did a redesign.

It wasn’t until 2010 I started using WordPress. I decided on WordPress for two reasons, Blogger got rid of/changed its FTP protocol, and I found out that WordPress has a magic button that would transfer my previous Blogger posts all over here. I was a little apprehensive at first, but with help from some WordPress experts, I have to say that I wish I made the change earlier. Totally worth it.

But I digress. The platform had nothing to do with why my blag was so unpopular. I think that most of it had to do with content – or lack thereof. My posting schedule was sporadic (at best). This didn’t allow me to build an audience or get better at blogging. Instead, I’ve become an expert at creating blogs. And now with WordPress, it’s even easier! Mwhahahahaha.

But I want people to, like, read my blog and stuff. But I need content. How do I get that? Well, for that I am trying the NaBloPoMo this year, National Blog Posting Month. (This will be in solidarity with my friends doing NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month). I will make at least one blog post per day this November. To find my voice.  To amuse myself too.

I hope you join me as I work through this. Because, if I know people want to hear what I have to say (however weird or dull it is) it will help me keep on keeping on. Case in point: I have a fan of my Vlogs (video blogs) I’ve done here and for a couple of other sites – I will keep doing them just for her. [Well and for my own amusement.]

I will be posting links to my posts from Twitter, Google+ and Facebook. If you don’t want to miss anything in the stream, you could subscribe to my RSS feed (links to the right). There is a straight RSS option and also an email option, which will send you one email each day with my posts in it.

Let’s make this blog a little more popular. Just a little.

What do you think? Are you a blogger? Do you have any advice for me?

November is writing month.

While my friends are working hard at writing their novels for National Novel Writing Month [http://www.nanowrimo.org/] I will be whiling my way at working full-time and going to school part-time. Fortunately, one of my classes is for writing Memoir. This means I WILL be writing and SHOULD have something to put on my blog. Finally. To that end, I will be taking part in the NaBloPoMo – the blogging challenge where everyone makes one blog post per day in November.

So here goes. And I’m not telling twitter. Yet. Waiting to see if I actually go through with it. [My track record is pretty bad.]

New Attitude

Frankly, no one follows my blog. I’ve had nothing to follow. I post things now and again, videos, updates, pictures; but never regularly, and nothing really substantive.

I am hoping that, with my new WordPress blog, that I can turn a new leaf, make more posts and write substantive stuff, if only for my own personal development.

To that end, look for posts on/about:

  • Feminism
  • What I’m doing
  • Geek stuff
  • Going back to school
  • You name it!

Okay. Let’s do it to it!
